In Scotland the Government are introducing a deposit return scheme for some plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans. 20p is going to be added to the price of each single-use drinks container. When the customer returns the container to the shop they will receive this 20p back in either cash or vouchers.
Customers will be able to return their containers either over the counter or by using a ‘reverse vending machine’. It is down to each shop to decide which method they want to implement.
The Government in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are also discussing the potential introduction of the scheme.
What Are Reverse Vending Machines?
Reverse Vending Machines are automated machines that collect, identify, sort and process empty drinks bottles and cans in exchange for money or vouchers.
Reverse Vending Machines are common in countries where there are mandatory recycling laws and plastic container deposit laws. They are also known as RVM’s, redeem machines, recycling returns machines or can and bottle recycling machines.
